Minor marijuana offenses are treated very similarly as DUI offenses, with one really notable exception: With a DUI, you can't plea as a first offender and have your record wiped, but you can with a minor drug offense. I've never been on probation, but know people that have. It actually is pretty rough on you. There is time and money involved, and you basically lose your rights to all sorts of privacy. But, I agree with you - it's far better all the way around than jail time for this sort of thing.

Another difference is that drug offenses are for simply possessing a substance (prohibition), while DUI is for using a drug in a way that could endanger other people. -jsq
